Romi Revola



Romi Revola received her training in sculpture at the  Bruce Chappel Sculpture Atelier in California and then started her career in India with a show of bronzes in 2005. From 2006 she began working in Bangalore with the Stainless Steel material. She has explored various facets of the medium in several sculptures ranging from 2 feet to 35 feet in height. “I would describe my art practice as a journey of introspective self-development in tandem with cultivation of aesthetic skills and technical understanding,” she says. Since 2005, Romi has installed both outdoor and monumental sculptures at business parks, private estates and public spaces.  However, her more recent body of work is conceptual in nature and is a response to several interconnected and tangential issues surrounding ecological and geological imbalance. She has engaged with a diverse range of materials – from turmeric on paper to Styrofoam, cotton, sponge, latex, turmeric roots and natural fibre. The sculpture explores the socio-economic aspects of drinking water. 2013 – Completed a major installation in Stainless Steel for Hilton Residences Hotel, Bangalore 2012 to 2013: Installed 2 monumental sculptures titled “Infinity” and “Binary” at Manyata Embassy Business Park, Bangalore. BINARY is a LIGHT sculpture. 2012 – Worked as Project Manager on a Public sculpture project. 4 prominent traffic junctions in Bangalore city were adopted by a cement manufacturer and cement sculptures were installed as a gift to the city. 2011: Installed 10 ft sculpture titled “The Eternal Triangle” at Century WinterSun, Bangalore 2010: Monumental 20 ft sculpture titled “Metropolis” installed in Whitefield, Bangalore for a mixed-use enclave 2008:  15 ft high Stainless Steel sculpture titled “Prism of Beaumonde” installed in Mumbai   2007:     12 ft high Stainless Steel sculpture titled, “Symphony”, installed at Kirloskar Business Park, Bangalore.  5 ft high SS sculpture titled “Helix” installed at Kemwell Industries Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore.    2006:  Executed 8 outdoor sculptures in Stainless Steel for a Business Park. The Series is titled “Corporate Culture” and is installed at Golf Links Business Park, Bangalore.     Executed a 33 ft high monumental sculpture in Stainless Steel titled “Crescent Wave”. 2005: Executed 2 mixed-media murals installed at Brigade Tech Park, Bangalore and one 5ft high fibreglass sculpture titled “Romi’s Thinker” installed at Acharya Institutes, Bangalore.  2004: Executed 3 mixed media murals and two Mild Steel sculptures (8 ft high each) for private collectors in Bangalore. 2004: Executed three outdoor sculptures in Bronze titled “Jazz Helix”, Bolero I and Bolero II for Biocon India Ltd.     I would describe my art practice as a journey of introspective self-development in tandem with cultivation of aesthetic skills and technical understanding, Concept Note Future Fossils | 2016 Although humans have inhabited the earth for millennia it is only in the past few decades, post industrialization, that human activity is completely altering the earth's geology. The foremost contributor to this change is the unending production of plastic in various forms. Plastics travel for thousands of miles and continue to live on for decades sinking into oceans and deep into the earth's surface. Scientists predict that in the future archaeologists will find remnants of today's landfills also known as "technofossils". Once underground, plastics have a high probability of being fossilized to stand testament to our hyper-consumerist generation. ============================================================================ The Golden Bough and other stories from the landfill | 2015 | Concept Note Nature these days is a rarefied commodity. From clean air being sold in jars to eco trails and nature resorts – it all comes neatly packaged with catchy buzz words to indulge our consumerist attitudes. It is very trendy to go “off the grid”. It’s very holier than thou to buy paraben-free cosmetics or shop at organic farmers’ markets. A piece of nature brought into the apartment or a weekend farm trip every now and then quiets our conscience so that we may go on burdening the land, river, ocean and air with our insidious existence. The backdrop of this series called 'The Golden Bough and other stories from the Landfill' is the relevance and sanctity of natural elements and natural objects in our post-industrialized hyper-consumerist economies. The foreground is the inevitable tussle between biodegradable objects and non-biodegradable materials that are so firmly entrenched in our daily lives. I’m beginning to see the prolific use of non-biodegradables as a manifestation of our desire for immortality. A way to go on living, vicariously, for 450 years through the materiality of the plastic beverage bottle since it takes that long to decompose and disappear off the face of the earth. Turmeric, an intensely organic material rich in color and metaphor proved to be an inspiring starting point for this body of work. From there I walked down many paths negotiating questions about ecological sustainability, paganism, climate change; the ironies of tokenism; the dilemmas of clean energy and the dynamics of urban-rural hybrids; and journeyed back through the maze to square one to face more questions. Can art objects made with discarded non-biodegradable materials reduce the burden on landfills? Can the aesthetic repurposing of dead trees sensitize and nurture the cycle of awareness? Is deification of natural elements a useful philosophy?
